Saw sketch of Mr. Markham's heart and home in the Herald . Would like to have an autographed photo and a synopsis of Mr. Markham's address at the Pease and Arbitration Meeting. Has received manuscript from Ernest Crosby and forwarded it to a Western Magazine.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
